Apprehension is a thing when it spares our lives from an eager bear. It's not a healthy thing when it stops you from living authentically.

The story of my brain injury

While the story of my brain injury might not be entirely wrapped up with a nice clean, happy ending yet, I have increased some capable lessons and bits of knowledge through this experience. I'll share a greater amount of these stories and experiences in a progression of posts throughout the following short time, yet for the time being here's the short form:

I fell in a freak accident, and the back of my skull landed on solid concrete.

(You know, as opposed to not solid concrete…)

At first, nothing happened.

In any case, following a couple of days of expanding torment and headaches, I began thinking something wasn't right.

A friend of mine, and kindred expert speaker, Michael, was chatting with me at our meeting and saw that I didn't look entirely right. Believing his experience as an attendant, I took after his recommendation and went at the hospital. They looked at it and said it was a blackout, and that I'd be better in a couple of days.

I was glad

On the other hand, so I thought…

For two weeks it steadily got worse and worse. When I came back to the hospital, I go to the same doctor that already saw me – his eyes get out of his face, and his jaw dropped – and said: "You're the same person who was here some time recently, isn't that so? Same blackout?" I answered: "yes" and in less than 5 minutes made me a CT scan.

I was terrified …

After that CT scan, the doctor looked at me with pity and told me: You have traumatic brain injury (TBI).

I felt as I was in a grave. No air. No light …only me and my heart beating as it was a horse race…

The speed of triage was impressive, but the results of that scan were devastating…

Fortunately, my neocortex, the brain's seat of higher-level processing, was mostly uninjured. And I had one other thing going for me; doctors said:

WHAT? I asked. Are you kidding me?

But indeed once I arrived home I made a bit of research on the internet and SURPRISING they had right.

After a week or so after the doctor told me the diagnostic, my wife said to me, that suddenly I fainted and lost my memory and that she called the ambulance and they decided that the best for me is to remain hospitalized.

Honestly, I didn't remember anything …

All I remember is, that on Day 8, I opened my eyes. Then my eyes began tracking voices; next, I wiggled my toes. Each of these baby steps was greeted with a massive celebration by my audience — an audience that included a lot of friends.

But my problem was other now …

I couldn't remember anything …I hardly recognize the face of my wife and kids …

I was entirely in another world…

After few days, it was a cold morning, I remember, and I saw my wife near me with tears in her eyes and praying …

“Good Morning, she scribbled. “

I said:” Injuries . . . What happens?!”

“You had an accident,” she said. “You fainted, and the doctors decided to hospitalize you until you get better.”

“No, I didn't faint!” I said with a convincing voice.

“Yes, that was a week ago.

“No no,” I said. “That's very bizarre. Put my mind at ease: this was not my fault? This was not my doing.”

“No, this was not your fault. The doctor just didn't know on the first view with what he is dealing.

I was shocked …

“Is this all real? Am I not dreaming any of this?”

“I've been having dreams that I'm tied down, and that monitor is beeping in my ears.I can't help feeling like my life's done.

I feel like I've been underwater for the past week... Should my brain be ringing?

I feel like my mind's been turned backward. What if I'm living my life backward?

When's my birthday?

All these things on my head stitch my head together?

If I didn't die, I'm just living in my head, though, outside my body.”

What is wrong with me?

Two days later, the doctors exam me again and gave me some drugs. Soon I was able to leave the hospital. But still, I remain on the treatment.

For the next 2 months, I couldn't work. I couldn't do anything. I couldn't feel productive, I couldn't give back, I couldn't be there for my family. As both the sole breadwinner of my family, as well as the only revenue-generator in my company (I have a staff of 5), things got stressful. Very stressful. And I failed.

The treatment didn't go ok; I started to have big headaches, to vomit, to not be able to sleep at night.

So I decided to stop all those harmful drugs, which didn't work for me.

To say I was desperate would be an understatement.

Life is different after a traumatic brain injury. In addition to all the physical changes a brain injury may bring, a traumatic brain injury can also mean the loss of a career or the disruption of an education. It can change your plans for the future, alter the way you meet and make friends, and affect the way you think about yourself. Life after a brain injury usually involves challenges, but that doesn't mean life is less valuable or fulfilling.

This happened to me …

Two things helped me keep my crap together: my wife and the desire to get my life, at any rate to some degree, back on track.

When it comes to love, most people have experienced the feeling of receiving different messages from their head and their heart. There is no right answer as to which one you should follow – ultimately it depends on the unique set of circumstances surrounding your situation.

You should, however, be aware that sometimes you need to trust in your heart over what your head tells you.

A personal example from my life is my relationship with my wife. She is Canadian, and I am American, and we met at a time when a relationship was the last thing on my mind. I had just come out of a long-term relationship, and I was enjoying the freedom of traveling in a foreign country with no responsibilities. Upon meeting, we quickly became very close, but I had to endure my mind telling me, “Don't get too serious as there is no way this relationship will last.” It is true that we have had more obstacles to overcome than your typical couple, but we trusted in our hearts and had made the relationship work.

My point here is that the mind will often focus on reasons why a relationship won't work rather than why it might. But today I am more than grateful because I had my wife near me in the post-traumatic period of my life after the accident.

I haven't shared with many people just how desperate I was, and the scary choices I almost made during that dark, lonely time.

We all want to stay healthy and independent. Along with keeping our bodies in good shape, we want to keep our minds healthy, too.

As I said above, my wife's support helped me to pass over that incident; OTHERWISE, I do believe even today I will be in the same situation.

Seeing that drugs and treatment didn't work for me, I decided tighter with my wife, to find a solution for my issue.

Right then and there, my ONLY resolution …for the rest of my life…was to figure out a way to STOP this disease from hurting my family any more than it already had.

I didn't care that the doctor said there isn't something more they can do…

And that I will continue to get worse until I stop having any lucid moments at all…

I wasn't going to let it happen.

So, I spoke at work and took an extended leave of absence…

Then, I began spending every single moment of every day pouring over my problem.

I just knew there had to be SOME solution to stop this madness and I was going to be the one who found it.

What I needed to do was look at facts and evidence…

So I became a “student” again…

Together with my wife, we studied professional opinions, journals, medical publications, university archives and health libraries, as though we'd never seen them before.

I have to say it: my health was worst and worst every day …I was vigorously tried to hide this in front of everybody …but seeing how everybody I care about sought to help me …I preferred to keep my feelings and bad mood in secret…

I started thinking that maybe fighting with my disease was impossible…and that I should just accept that I was going to be gone forever.

But then something happened.

I got an entirely unexpected call from Michael, due to which I arrived at the hospital in the first phase.
